Croquet event helps the Augusta Ballet By Lisa Kaylor | Staff Writer Posted October 7, 2008 3:04 PM Boeckh Park became a sea of white and khaki Saturday as supporters of the Augusta Ballet came out to the third annual Croquet for the Ballet dressed in the sport's traditional colors. This was the first year the tournament was held at Hammond's Ferry. "It's a beautiful venue," said Patti Ann Smith, managing director for the ballet. "The turnout just gets better and better." Teams played on eight courts, with the winners of each game advancing though elimination rounds. Each court was sponsored through either in-kind donations or cash sponsorship. The championship round of play kicked off the evening festivities, which included a dinner catered by Manuel's Bread CafĂƒ and music in the pavilion by Turner Simkins. The event also included a silent auction in which players bid on items such as vacations and original artwork. Badminton and bocce ball were available for participants when they finished croquet. Last year's fundraiser, which was held at the Augusta Country Club, earned $7,000 for the ballet. The venues have gotten bigger, as well. The first year was "literally in somebody's yard," Smith said. "This year we wanted bigger space," she said. The opening of Manuel's in September also was a factor in choosing the riverfront neighborhood. "We needed to have it where it was easy," Smith said. "Having Manuel's here is perfect." First-time croquet players Dianne Lariscy and Ashley Propst said they were having a great time supporting the ballet. "It's a great event," said Propst, who lives in Hammond's Ferry. "Everybody seems to be having a lot of fun." Reach Lisa Kaylor at lisa.kaylor@northaugustatoday.com.
